Rainy day things to do on Cape Cod | Captain Freeman Inn

Picture from We Need a Vacation blog

I just smiled when I saw this picture – it brought back a flood of memories as this  was taken at Michael’s Cottages in Brewster. We were neighbors with the original owner’s- Mike and Cheryl, where we owned our first bed and breakfast, Brewster by the Sea. Cheryl was quite creative and always placed these lovelies in her front yard for different holidays. On this particular day, we had had quite a bit a rain and we were all ready for sunshine. When I first saw these gals, it  brought rays of sunshine to my soul- after all there are many ways to lift our spirits when we have rainy days, especially when it is vacation time. Shown below are some of our favorites:

Our Rainy Day Favorite Things to do on your Cape Cod Vacation

1. Check out the Lighthouses

We have so many historic lighthouses on Cape Cod and a rainy day is the perfect time to explore and locate them. We have a great guide book in the room written by Kim Grant  that is filled with great information on our lighthouses. You may also want to read a previous blog about how many light houses are on Cape Cod

2. Explore Museums

Cape Cod has so many wonderful museums.  They are all so unique and well thought through. Many are run by volunteers that have retired on Cape Cod, and we have found that those curators are the best!

Osprey near the Natural History Museum

Cape Cod Natural History Museum in Brewster, Ma:

We adore our Natural History Museum that is located in west Brewster. While it may be small, it is filled with wonderful exhibits, an indoor observation area where you can sit and relax and observe the marsh habitat just our side the window and if the weather cooperates- don’t miss the wonderful Wing Trail which is a nature walk down to the bay.

Chatham Fish Pier

Chatham Railroad Museum in Chatham, MA: This museum is located in the original Chatham Railroad depot that was built in 1887. It has been beautifully restored and takes you through the history of Cape Cod railroads during Captain Freeman’s time. Have fun touring an original 1910 caboose. This museum is open mid-June to mid-September every year. While in Chatham don’t forget to stop at the Chatham Fish Pier where you can enjoy the observation deck with great views of Monomoy and an occasional seal. It’s even fun on a rainy day with a umbrella.

Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis, Ma: Art enthusiasts will enjoy this outstanding museum. The Cape Cod Museum of Art features all types of art exhibits with many year round programs.  We also love to recommend the Cape Cinema which is right next door. They always have great quality matinees and evening movies.

Heritage Museum and Gardens in Sandwich Ma: we recommend this museum frequently as the car museum is quite a hoot-  even for non-car enthusiasts like me- I always enjoy going there. They also have beautiful gardens, an indoor carousel and a small art museum.

3. Enjoy indoor sports

It’s always fun to let your inner child come out to play and what better way then to play indoor games on a rainy day

Candlestick Bowling and Barbecue at Orleans Bowling: we love to take our grandsons here and don’t miss out on there great barbecue. It’s the small candlestick balls which makes for a lot of fun and a great way for indoor fun.

Ice Skating at the Charles Moore Arena in Orleans, Ma:

what better fun then to ice skate and better  yet to have a go at curling during your stay on Cape Cod. Check out the web site for the Charles Moore Arena and enjoy an old fashion afternoon of iceskating or learning how to curl on the ice.
