Happy New Years!
At the Captain Freeman Inn we are energized to welcome in this New Year with hopes that it brings peace, health and prosperity to our family and friends. And while our weather may be cold, we are thinking about summer, new recipes, planting our gardens and some fun new amenities. We had a record breaking season last year and are just so exhilarated to share this wonderful property and location with our friends. Byron is working on a newsletter that will give you some hints of the wonderful surprises we have in store for our guests.
Our Favorite Activities to enjoy during your stay on Cape Cod
We are continually amazed at the wealth of activities our guests can enjoy while staying at our boutique best and breakfast. The quiet season gives us time to explore ourselves, and our guests are always giving us new ideas of places to experience. Listed below are 8 of our “not to be missed activities” to enjoy during your stay at the best bed and breakfast on Cape Cod- the Captain Freeman Inn.
8 Favorite Destinations on Cape Cod:
Experience our wonderful Cape Cod Wineries
We love our wine at the Captain Freeman Inn and frequently share some of our favorite Italian Red Wines with our guests. And while Italian is our favorite, we are continually impressed with the quality of wines being made on Cape Cod, including Cape Cod First Crush Winery. They have masterly combined the latest in wine making technology and equipment with transporting the freshest of grapes from California. Owned by Dr Frank Puzio, our former eye doctor- yes he’s doing this in his retirement, this local winery is a wonderful place to go for a tour and afternoon of wine tasting.
Another great winery can be found in Falmouth, the Cape Cod Winery. Their web site describes their grapevines as “planted on a splendid site with sandy gravel soil and gentle slops which are ideal for wine grape growing and parallel the great vineyards of southern France and Italy. The European wine grape varieties we have chosen are particularly suited to the special terroir of the Cape. The extraordinary wines produced from these fruits reflect the very special character of the Cape Cod sun, soil and climate that may be savored in each sip”
We love to recommend day trips to Falmouth. Check out a previous blog for other things to do on that side of the Cape.
Not to be missed is the Truro Vineyard. Just love the history of their property-
Built in 1813, the vineyard’s Federal house—now home to our offices and gift shop—was first owned by John and Hannah Hughes, and later occupied by their granddaughter Amelia and her husband Michael Rich. The Riches cultivated the estate into a prosperous farm selling grain, milk, and coal. During the 1940’s Elton and Margaret Rich produced magnificent cantaloupes grown in the estate’s warm, well drained sandy soil. Later, this same soil and site would prove to be a perfect spot for growing grapes. A working farm for over 200 years, the Truro Vineyards estate is rich in history and vision.
Visit the National Seashore on Cape Cod
Just about everyone knows about our treasured National Seashore. No matter how long you are on Cape Cod this destination is NOT TO BE MISSED! There is something so exhilarating about walking on a beach all by yourself with just the sounds of the waves as a back drop.
The Salt Pond Visitor Center is a great place to start. The rangers there are full of great information on which beach meets your needs. On our last visit to Nauset Lighthouse Beach we watched the seals and surfers for hours.
Cape Cod Bike Paths and Trails
The islands are filled with wonderful bike paths. Our favorite runs right through Brewster and will take you all the way up to Marconi Beach. Many other trails are also available. Check out this wonderful web site which has great links for the details of each.
The picture shown above is from Nickerson State Park, which is just a few miles from the inn and can easily be connected to on your bike without using your car. It’s filled with wonderful lakes, bike and hiking trails for all to enjoy.
Heritage Museum and Gardens on Cape Cod
Not to be missed is the wonderful gardens and car museum at the Heritage Gardens in Sandwich. We love to ride the old fashion carousel which is within the park and to also visit the small art museum included in the property. While visiting this town stop by the Fishermen’s View for a wonderful lunch or dinner while you can enjoy beautiful views of the canal.
Visit our Cape Cod Lighthouses
There is something very magical about our lighthouses on Cape Cod. They are filled with history and are a beacon of light for many still today. Check out a previous blog to learn that history. We recently took our kids to Nauset Light and then later the historical Three Sister’s Lighthouse. What a great place to learn about Cape Cod’s history.
Experience the natural beauty of Great Island in Wellfleet
Whenever we have time we love to go to Wellfleet, eat fresh oyster at the Naked Oyster and walk the Great Island trail. One side of the path is ocean and the other is a beautiful wooded path. Harrison is allowed and we can spend hours in this little slice of heaven.
Check out the Chatham Fish Pier
Byron and I love to visit Chatham and a not to be missed stop is the Chatham Fish Pier. In the summer time you can pick up a delicious lobster at the clam shack and also take a short boat ride over to Monomoy where you will see endless seals and seagulls. This pier is where most of the Cape’s fishing boats come in and out and they have created a great observation deck to view not only the boats but to see breathtaking vistas of Monomoy and the Atlantic beyond.
Visit our local Yarn Shops:)
Knowing not all of our guests are knitters but my last suggested favorite activity to enjoy during your Cape Cod getaway is to visit my favorite yarn stores on Cape Cod, the Great Yarn in Chatham and Salt Yarn in Yarmouth. Both have the most wonderful selection of quality yarns and have wonderful owners to help you with your projects.
Come Stay With Us at the Captain Freeman Inn
All of these wonderful destinations are just a short drive or walk from our breathtaking location in Brewster. Choose our most popular room, the Wellfleet room which includes a luxurious spa bathroom and a romantic cozy king bedroom complete with a gas fireplace and central air. This romantic room is a perfect room to come back to after your day of adventure and sightseeing on Cape Cod.
Sometimes it’s all about the bath:)
