9 of our favorite things to do in Brewster

Every town on Cape Cod has its own character- Chatham and Falmouth have beautiful town centers with great shopping and harbors, P’Town is known for its great art galleries, crazy festivals and whale watching, Wellfleet is a humble fishing village that has Wellfleet Oysters and great dining, Sandwich is a beautiful old town that has the Heritage Museum and Gardens and the Glass Museum and saving the best for last- our wonderful, picturesque town of Brewster has so many unique characteristics that are so different from the other towns on Cape Cod.

We love Brewster for so many reasons and when guests ask us what sets us apart- we say “Brewster is a quiet community on the bay side that is known for all of our historic sea captain’s homes. We are a perfect destination for those wanting to explore all of Cape Cod and to connect with nature. Our Brewster flats, just a short stroll from the inn, are a perfect way to walk for miles and miles on picturesque, quiet beaches. And whether you decide to drive our bike- the National Seashore beaches are a short distance away.” Many of our guests decide to spend a full day in Brewster enjoying all of our favorite things that are noted below:

1. The Brewster General Store is just a few steps from our inn and is such an old fashion gem! The picture shown above was taken during a Fourth of July celebration, and they are always staying true to their old fashion heritage by bringing our small town together for celebrations. We always look forward to the Christmas caroling that gathers on the front porch in December. The store is filled with old fashion candy, toys, fudge and unique gifts. And not forgetting our famous Brewster Scoop which is beside the store and is open all summer for wonderful old fashion ice cream.

   

2. We are lucky to have the Cape Cod Rail Trail running right through our town with the bike path being just a short ride from the inn. The bike path is well maintained and runs by many picturesque towns, cranberry bogs, lakes and the National Seashore.

   

3. The Brewster Grist Mill is a restored mill that sits near Upper Mill Pond. In the spring it is quite a sight to see the herring migrating to the pond where they lay their eggs and spend the summer:) Many of our guests plan their visit to witness this sight. Visit a previous blog to learn about this migration.

   

   In the fall the Grist Mill is open and will demonstrate how corn was ground using the old mill wheel. We love to purchase the cornmeal for use with our many cornmeal recipes at the inn.

   

    

4. We adore our Nickerson State Park which is just a short drive or bike ride from the inn. The park is filled with pristine kettle ponds, bike paths and walking trails.

   

   Harrison loves to swim year round in the lakes. There are also some off road bike paths throughout the park with the paved bike path being hilly. The Cape Cod Rail trail runs right through Nickerson which makes it a nice stop during your biking adventures.

   

5. Brewster is known for our spectacular sunsets. The setting sun usually cascades beautiful colors over the bay waters. With Breakwater Beach being just a short stroll from the inn, we usually take a walk after dinner to see this spectacular view.

   

6. West of town is Drummer Boy Park which hosts many summer events including the Brewster band concerts, the Brewster Farmers Market and many summer craft and antique shows. In the spring the field in front of the windmill comes alive with yellow wild flowers.

   

7. We are especially excited to have  new restaurant in town that is just a short walk from the inn. Spinnakers is co-owned by two lovely folks- Rob & Andrea and they have created a wonderful atmosphere with delicious, fresh and local foods. Rob makes baclava daily and the seafood and bolognese dishes are delightful. We have included this restaurant in our Quiet Season Dinner Package which also includes a two night stay, breakfast each morning, chocolate covered strawberries, Prosecco and roses.

   

8. We love to swim in Upper Mill Pond and to walk around the preservation land in the Punkhorns. It’s also a perfect lake to learn how to sail or kayak. There are 2 resident swans that are fun to watch.

   

9. And lastly we just adore our inn- The Captain Freeman Inn on Cape Cod. We feel the Captain Freeman Inn is  the absolute best place to stay in Brewster! Our historic inn was built in 1866 by William Freeman and includes 10 luxurious guest rooms- all with private baths. Our location is perfect in that we are nestled behind the Brewster General Store in the center of town. We have a great front and side porch where guests can relax, read the morning paper or just rock life away at a much slower pace. Our pool and fire pit make for a great place to relax after a busy day exploring Cape Cod.

   

   And our beaches make for a peaceful day to relax and enjoy the sand and sunshine.

And for those reasons, we think Brewster and the Captain Freeman is the best place to stay on Cape Cod !
