Many of our guests visit Woods Hole to catch their ferry as part of a day trip to Martha’s Vineyard. While most leave early in the morning to have more time on the island, many miss seeing much daylight hours in Falmouth and Woods Hole. This past Wednesday, Byron and I decided to spend the day in Falmouth for our weekly adventure.

Our first stop was the tranquil Quissett Harbor. Many boats are still moored here with the shot above representing Old Cape Cod. At the far edge of the harbor there is a path that goes over the hill to the Knob, which is a wonderful bird sanctuary and beach.

The trail was full of birdlife and fishermen on the rocky beach.

After enjoying the pretty views of the harbor we headed down to the historic district for dinner.

We loved walking downtown and waved to our friends, innkeeper Trish and Kevin, at the lovely Captain’s Manor Inn.

The village Green is bordered by Colonial, Federal, Italianate and Greek Revival homes. Similar to Brewster, many of these homes were built by Sea Captains and later converted to Bed and Breakfasts. The town is filled with many lovely shops, a few small museums and wonderful restaurants.
We chose to dine at the Glass Onion as we had heard many good reviews over the years.
The food and ambiance did not disappoint.

Byron had a perfectly cooked piece of beef and Donna had her favorite…

Scallops with fresh haricots verts.
The Endive salad was refreshing…

and the signature mixed cocktail – Gin with Cucumber a perfect was to relax after a busy day of hiking.

During our drive home Byron and I were laughing as we always scout out good places to hike and eat. There are many other things to enjoy during your day trip to Falmouth and Woods Hole including some of these suggestions:
Visit the Woods Hole Science Museum and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
Visit the Nobska Light on Church Street
Visit the Spohr Gardens where you will see 6 acres of spectacular gardens. Thanks to Charles and Margaret Spohr more then 100,000 daffodils bloom in the spring, followed by lilies, azaleas, magnolias and the Cape Cod favorite, hydrangeas.

Enjoy biking on the Shining Sea Bike Path. If you don’t have your bikes with you you can always rent some at the Corner Cycle.
Visit the Ashamed Holly Wildlife Sanctuary in East Falmouth where you will enjoy 45 acres of scenic paths overflowing with holly.
Last but not least stop in to Pie in the Sky for a great cup of java and a pastry.

After your busy day of exploring Falmouth come back to your deluxe fireside room at our Brewster Bed and Breakfast. We always have an afternoon delight to enjoy with a cup of coffee or tea. Today’s repast included Pumpkin Bars and Raspberry Almond Bars with Apple Cider.
Our Quiet Season 2 night Dinner Package begins next week where you can enjoy a Cape Cod getaway with luxurious accommodations and dinner for two at one of our favorite local restaurants. Warm, sunny fall days leaves plenty of time to walk our beautiful Cape Cod beaches.
