September Book Review

Today is another gorgeous day on Cape Cod and while there are hints of fall in the air one would never know it today. Harrison is especially happy as effective October 1st he can walk with us on the beach (or swim in his case)

I read three wonderful books last month and found myself being pulled from either watching some of my new favorite fall shows or reading. I also have a new appreciation for the term “binge TV watching” Byron and I started watching the new TV series Ozark- oh my goodness folks- this series will certainly keep you on the edge of your seat and wanting to watch the next show. We just kept watching the first season one after the other as the acting and plot were so good-highly recommend!

Onto my three recent reads- I would recommend reading all three!

Death of a Cozy Writer by G.M Mallet

I have been loving mysteries of late, and this novel won the 2008 Agatha Award. I appreciated a summary of all the characters in the beginning as the plot developed quickly. I smiled reading the entire book as I felt like I was standing on the sidelines throughout. The story takes place in an eighteenth-century Cambridgeshire manor, where best selling mystery writer, Sir Adrian Beauclerk-Fisk delights in tormenting his four grown children. He invites his entire family to the manor for his upcoming wedding. Of course all of the children are upset as they now think their inheritance is in jeopardy. Panic sets in with the backstabbing brood when the eldest son turns up dead in the wine cellar. We soon meet Detective Chief Inspector St. Just and the story just keeps getting better and better as we follow the clues to find out who killed the appointed heir.

 

The Girl from the Sea by Shalini Boland

My daughter Jennifer sent me the reading list from her book club and this one caught my attention. It’s one of those stories that you just can’t put down. For some strange reason it reminded my of the Readers Digest  stories I use to read when I was younger-remember those books that were a collection of short stories? My parents loved them, and I found myself reading most of the monthly stories.

This book is about a gal that washes up on a beach with a total memory loss. As the story unfolds she finds that she has a lot of money, the perfect boyfriend and a beautiful home. The pieces just don’t seem to go together- why does she not have any attraction to her boyfriend? Why did her mother and sister not come when she was in the hospital? Where did she get all the money? All the pieces come together on the last few chapters and let’s just say it’s filled with suspense.

The Spy by Paulo Coelho

Byron and I both loved the Alchemist, and I was tickled when Byron brought this new book home after reading it on his Wyoming trip last month. I vaguely knew the story of Mata Hari but after reading this book I have a new appreciation for this true life character.

The story of Marguerite Gertrude Zelle (Mara-Hari) is told from fictional letters read as a history prior to and during World War I women’s fight for equality. The title of the book explains that she was prosecuted as a spy, but it’s hard to tell  if she was a double agent. Toward the end of the book I knew I wanted more information about this sad story as the  story line felt disjointed. All in all, a good read to learn about this piece of history.
