New Year Beginnings | Captain Freeman Inn

We love inn keeping and are just so tickled to have all of our renovations completed. For those that do not know our past- we bought the Freeman out of foreclosure 7 years ago and saying it mildly, it was quite tired. We knew the bones were here, got a great price, and have been busy bees renovating ever since. We replaced the hot water heaters, the bathrooms, the air-conditioning, the pool pump, the roof, the beds, the furniture, the kitchen- you get the drift- almost everything has been either replaced, repaired or remodeled.

The end results have been remarkable, and we feel out 10 room boutique bed and breakfast really is the best place to stay on Cape Cod! ┬áThis winter is the first quiet season that the inn is not totally torn apart for our yearly renovation- YEAH! It’s such a treat to be able to enjoy this beautiful inn, have time to read and knit AND to plan some fun new ideas for the next season.

We are blessed to have over half of our business repeat, and we like to change things up a bit each year. This year we are making some fun changes to our amenities and are putting together a fun social media campaign.

There are three things in this world that we adore- good wine, flowers and chocolate and for Byron good whiskey:)

Over the years we have had so much fun with our welcoming tray that use to include fresh flowers from our garden, chocolate truffles from Brewster Sweets and a bag full of lavender for you to take home. We will still have plenty of fresh flowers on the breakfast tables and throughout the inn but have decided to start growing African Violets for our guests to take home. We have a small green house in the basement and will be buying small African Violet plants by the 100’s so we can nurture them to be in full bloom on our welcoming tray for each guest’s arrival. The best part of this plan is that our guest’s can enjoy the blooming flower during their stay and then place it on a window sill to enjoy once they get home.

Onto talking about our second love- chocolate! We do love our truffles from Brewster Sweets and we will always have some on hand for our die hard truffle loving guests. Byron and I were laughing at ourselves as I think we have become chocolate snobs. We love our good chocolate and purchase quite a bit of Lindt chocolate for the inn’s baking. Our daughter is also into chocolate and has learned quite a bit about chocolate manufacturing since she opened the Boston General Store. She connected us with the lovely folks from Dick Taylor Chocolate. Their craft chocolate is always homemade, good for you and quite delicious. We were totally sold not only with the taste but also when we saw their wrapper included a great picture of ship building- we were sold:) We will be giving all our guests a bar of dark chocolate with sea salt and will have many other flavors of this extraordinary chocolate in our gift shop.

And lastly, here is some hot off the press information about our new marketing contest-

“Where in the world are the CFI Molasses Cookie Contest”

As many of you know we love our molasses cookies at the Freeman. We have a bottomless cookie jar that is only empty if you raid us at night when we are sleeping. We make 1,000 of these cookies every year and share the recipe in our “thank you for staying with us e-mail” after your stay. This year we have decided to reinvent the cookie travels with a new marketing contest. Here’s how it goes:

Enjoy our addictive molasses cookies during your stay at the Captain Freeman Inn.

On your check out day we will give you a gift bag that will include 2 cookies to enjoy on your ride home and a third cookie to save for that perfect moment. That special cookie will be wrapped in ribbon and placed in a freezer bag for you to place in your freezer when you get home to keep it fresh.

Start thinking about the perfect place to take a selfie of you, your sweetie or your family with your CFI Cookie. The location can be at your happy place, your home or gardens or you and your cookie can travel to an exotic place to take a selfie or a picture of just the cookie with a wonderful backdrop.

CFI cookie in Costa Rica

The picture above has a great story. Many years ago we traveled to Costa Rica and had a great vacation- we climbed to see active volcanos up close, basked by the sea and zip lined in a rain forest. Several years later a guest sent us this picture of their travels in Costa Rica. Our molasses cookie sat beside the same volcano caldera that we had visited years before.

You get the point- take your cookie and have fun. After you take the perfect picture post it on your Facebook or Instagram page and tag us @captainfreemaninn with the hashtags- #cficookie #captainfreemaninn and #cookietales. Then tell us about your travels. We’ll repost it to our Instagram and Facebook pages. If you do not have a Facebook or Instagram page just send it to our e-mail address- [email protected] and we will post it for you. At the end of the year whoever has the post with the most likes gets a free two night stay at the Freeman- your choice of room or date.

After all, life is about happy memories, having fun and posting great pictures of our CFI cookie travels.

Harrison and everyone at the Freeman looks forward to hosting you at our very special bed and breakfast on Cape Cod. According to Harrison, “the lakes in Nickerson are the perfect swimming temperature”.

Happy January!

  1. I love the traveling cookie idea! So much more fun than a Flat Stanley! We accept the challenge and can’t wait to receive our traveling cookie in July along with the sea salt chocolate bar and the violet!
