This morning I had the sudden realization that summer is indeed almost over! Nooooooo……please tell me it is not so! We have had a glorious summer at the inn, meeting many new guests and catching up with our repeat guests that come every year. The weather has been warm with mostly sunny beach days, and our new salt water pool has been popular all summer. It was also a new summer for Byron and me as we had more time to relax, garden and visit with guests after selling Brewster by the Sea last year.

Our biggest joy was reaping the harvest from our new garden which was bountiful- including the sunflowers that just bloomed in all their glory!
I am an ice-cream girl at heart that would eat ice cream for dessert every night if my middle would cooperate. To me, summer and ice-cream just go together! I have been thinking about writing a blog update of the good ice cream spots on Cape Cod and suddenly realized that I better hurry up, as we will all be thinking about apples, apple cider and pumpkins pretty darn soon.
Shown below is what my research found, as well as our own ice cream experiences over the summer. Happy end of summer everyone. It’s never too late to book a stay at the Captain Freeman and to enjoy a delicious homemade ice cream cone before thinking about all that fall stuff.

Four Seas Ice- Cream
After doing my homework for this blog, I decided that this ice cream parlor is our next destination when we have time to get away from the inn. How could one not fall in love with the founder, Well Watson, who is shown above? They’ve been winning national and local competitions for a decade and have been named in top ten ice creams by national publications. Four Seas Ice- Cream is located in Centerville and is one of the oldest ice cream parlors in New England. The quaint building use to be a blacksmith shop and opened it’s doors in 1934 to serve ice-cream. Four Seas specializes in flavors that are old fashion with the freshest ingredients and local fruits. While having an ice cream at Four Seas also remember that Centerville also has the Centerville Pie Company. They have the most delicious pies on the planet!
Cape Cod Creamery

Cape Cod Creamery is located in South Yarmouth, and I think their name says it all….it’s all about the cream to make good ice cream! The ice cream flavors are named for towns and villages on the Cape and Islands including: Dennis Double Chocolate, Bass River Black Raspberry, Chapin Cherry Chocolate and Cummaquid Coconut, all made on site with delicious homemade waffle cones made daily as well.

Sundae School
With three locations, the Sundae School is easy to get to and has delicious ice- cream. The ” lovely” shown above was Donna’s treat last month. Sundae School originally opened it’s doors in 1976 and has been serving delicious ice cream ever since. Their ice cream is made at the locations and are made in small batches using all fresh ingredients.

Emack & Bolio’s
Sometimes the price doesn’t matter and in my opinion, this motto applies to this fabulous ice cream parlor in Orleans. If you are a peanut butter lover, try the salted chocolate peanut butter cup ice cream-Salty, chocolately, peanut buttery perfection. Their ice cream is creamy, rich and smooth with a limited amount of flavors- but in this case, it’s all about doing what you have really, REALLY well!
Chocolate Sparrow
I had to mention the Chocolate Sparrow– not so much for their ice-cream but for their chocolate sauce which is home-made. I am a simple girl when it comes to ice cream and usually order vanilla ice-cream with hot fudge sauce and whip cream. I had a guest comment to me that they would like the Sunday School ice-cream with the Chocolate Sparrow chocolate sauce. That would be a match made in heaven.

J.T’s-
Every spring when JT’s opens, Byron and I have a tradition of eating at JT’s- sitting outside, enjoying fried clams and french fries and having ice-cream for dessert. While it’s not homemade, the ice-cream is good and their fried clams delicious!

Brewster Scoop
We are lucky to have an ice-cream parlor next door, beside our treasured Brewster General Store. While it is not home-made, the ice cream is always good and a perfect way to end your day. We love to get our cones and walk down to Breakwater Beach to watch our Cape Cod Sunset.

Kream ‘n Kone
I would be amiss not to mention this Cape Cod classic that is know for their fried food and soft ice-cream. My mom and I use to have a tradition of going to get our haircuts every month and stopping here for a soft ice cream. I must say it’s one of the best soft cream cones I can remember.

Nauset Ice Cream
After spending the day at a National Seashore beach, the perfect stop on the way home is Nauset Ice Cream which is located in Eastham. The building is nothing fancy but the ice-cream is homemade and made on the premises. All of the creative flavors makes decision making very hard……. shall I order- Cape Cod Cranberry, vanilla, chocolate, coffee, coffee heath, Oreo, chocolate chip, French vanilla, strawberry, chocolate mousse, black raspberry mochaccino, mint chip, coconut, coconut almond chip, coconut chip, orange pineapple, rum raisin, maple walnut, cookie dough, ginger, chocolate peanut buttercup, Reese’s peanut butter, Purple Cow, and Peppermint Stick????? All sound delicious!
Ahhhhh, just writing this blog makes me want to go out for ice-cream.
Already thinking about some fun new quiet season packages and while they don’t include ice-cream, thinking french hot chocolate might be nice:)
