The art scene on Cape Cod

Sailing picture at the inn by Peter Richenberg

Every spring I enjoy writing a post about Art on Cape Cod. From our historic Sandwich village to the eclectic art colony in P’Town,  Cape Cod is filled with many art galleries, studios and museums for our guests to explore. Previous blogs included highlights of our favorite artists in Art on Cape Cod  and a fun blog about our own art that we have gathered over the years. While most of our monies have been spent on restoring inns, we have received some lovely pieces as gifts from friends and family.

In this blog I thought it would be fun to mention our favorite galleries on Cape Cod. We always listen to our guests when they talk about their travels and sometimes their art purchases.

For generations many artists  have flocked to Cape Cod to be inspired by our beautiful landscapes and to participate in the burgeoning art scene. Their talents are remarkable, and we are continually in awe of the wonderful art that surrounds us on Cape Cod.

North Haven Lobsters by John Murphy Picture from Addison Art Gallery
    1. Addison Art Gallery -our very favorite art gallery on Cape Cod!  This gallery may be small but it is filled with lovely pieces that showcases many local artists. The prices always seem fair and affordable.  I was tickled to see  Mike Murphy as one of their showcase artists on their web site. We have always admired his pieces when we dine at his local restaurant- Land Ho! The gallery overlooks the Orlean’s Town Cove in a classic Cape house, making for a perfect Cape Cod art experience. The gallery includes many different medians from pastels and watercolors to  oil paintings, photography and sculpture.
    2. Tao Water Art Gallery on 6A in Barnstable and in Provincetown.  I use to be a furniture store buyer for a contemporary store in Houston and came to appreciate modern design and art. These two galleries feature contemporary Chinese art. The gallery in Barnstable represents over 30 artists from all over the globe, while the gallery in Provincetown has a greater focus on emerging artists. For those that love modern art you will not be disappointed with this eclectic collection.
      Harvest Gallery
    3. Harvest Gallery and Wine Bar–  Oh my goodness- what a great place to visit!  They have masterfully combined fine art, food, and wine while featuring the work of more than 30 artists. Harvest also has live music on certain nights, so check their entertainment schedule while experiencing great food and local art.
    4. Left Bank Gallery was established in 1971, and has galleries in P’Town and Wellfleet. A continuously rotating collection of paintings – from lyrical abstract to “plein air” realism, owner Audrey Sherwin Parent pairs canvases and sculptures with functional ware for the home. Individual spaces are designed with handcrafted lighting, vessels and furniture.
    5. Tree’s Place  a local artist once told us- “you know you’ve made it in the art world when your piece is hanging in the Tree’s Place Gallery!”  The gallery is located right at the Orleans rotary and is filled with stunning contemporary pieces.
    6. Struna Art Gallery We feel very lucky to have such wonderful artists in our little town of Brewster. With two locations, Struna Galleries offers two chances to view some absolutely amazing artwork. The galleries feature the work of Timothy Jon Struna, renowned artist, painter, and printmaker. The gallery in Brewster is also Struna’s studio and home, while the gallery in Chatham features his work and is owned by his daughter.
      Karen North Wells
    7. Underground Art Gallery– featuring Karen North Wells. We are fortunate to know Karen and to have many of her pieces throughout the inn. She is so talented and represents old world Cape Cod! Her gallery is just a few miles from the inn.
    8. The Schoolhouse Gallery in P’Town specializes in modern and contemporary painting, photography, and printmaking. Representing over 50 artists it’s a wonderful stop during your travels to P’Town. They have recently collaborated with Artyard, a new and innovative arts center in Frenchtown, NJ to share the works of Kahn & Selesnick.
      Cape Cod Museum of Art
    9. Cape Cod Museum of Art  in Dennis is comprised of seven distinct galleries, including its very own sculpture garden.  The CCMoA also offers interesting classes for visitors.
